inPrior to President Buhari’s inauguration on May 29, the Nigeria Military and its joint task force partners in Chad, Niger and Cameroun seemed to be breaking the hold of Boko Haram, the Islamic Terrorist group, in the North East of Nigeria. We had started breathing a sigh of relief that this monster’s days were numbered.
We were even delighted at the liberation by the Nigeria Military of many of the female hostages captured by these terrorists who were imprisoned in different camps by these extremists and used as sex slaves.
At President Buhari’s swearing in ceremony speech, he vowed to bring the terrorists violence to an end. If what I hear is correct, he promised to do so within two weeks. As laughable as that claim is, it appears it was meant to inspire confidence in Nigerians based on the achievements of the Nigeria Military witnessed prior to him taking over the reigns of power.
Roll on a few weeks later and it appears sadly, that Boko Haram seems to have regrouped. They have killed close to 500 Nigerians if not more in the last few weeks through raids, ambushes and suicide bombings in the North East cities of Maiduguri and recently Potiskum.
The APC led Government of President Buhari who criticised the government of his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan for its cluelessness in the tackling of the Boko Haram insurgency, are now beginning to feel the heat and can now see that the war on terror is not a matter of rhetoric.
With the recent massacre of 150 civilians a few days ago, President Buhari appeared to have been humbled and is now ‘open to negotiations ‘ with Boko Haram. This in my opinion is an admittance of defeat in the war against terrorism.
For now, we wait and see how the Nigeria military willl respond to this recent wave of killings. Nigerians will be hoping that the military respond in similar brutal fashion and claim a few more scalps of these terrorists.
The President has to find a way to block Boko Haram’s financial support and weapon supplies. This to me is the way to win the war. He has to identify their sponsors and prosecute them no matter how highly placed they are in society. If he can achieve this, the terrorists will be forced to abandon this evil crusade for good.
